From refrigerators that talk to your phone and remind you to pick up a gallon of milk as you’re passing by the grocery store, to potted plants that have in-built watering technology, toilets that clean themselves and baths that play music – these are all innovations that are turning The Smart Home Ideal into a tangible reality.
While some of these technologies may sound outlandish and bizarre, others really do make sense in an age where an efficient home is becoming the new norm and time-saving and energy-saving are top concerns.
I can already imagine the possibilities – I’m sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic on I-275 trying to get home from an exhausting day at work. I pull out my iPhone, open my Smart Home app and set A/C to cool, bathtub to fill – hot water – bubbles on, speakers to Ed Sheeran playlist, lights to dim. Ahh, when I get home I’ll have a nice relaxing bath waiting for me!
Today, technology such as Amazon Echo and Nest are shifting the momentum towards a fully integrated home. Amazon Echo is a voice-activated Bluetooth speaker that will play your preferred music on demand, create shopping lists, set timers and announce the weather forecast. Nest is an energy-saving thermostat that will soon be able to synch up with other home appliances such as your dishwasher, lights and locks.
Ikea recently announced its first furniture line (dubbed the “Home Smart” line) that offers wireless charging for phones, tablets, and other mobile devices.
The shift in the way people are building and designing their new homes is evident in the new generation of homebuyers. According to this article in Direct Marketing News, “More than half of women ages 18 to 34 told Better Homes and Gardens that they would want their future homes to have smart-tech lighting, security, and heating and cooling systems.”
And realtors are confirming this preference towards “smart homes” also. “Nearly 60 percent of the real estate agents polled said they are seeing more smart home features in listing descriptions than they did two to five years ago.”
At Waterleaf, we have already created a solid foundation for Smart Home technology in every home. Waterleaf is proud to be an exclusive member of ULTRAFi Communities. An ULTRAFi Community is a first-of-its kind residential environment where every home is a Smart Home and every resident enjoys the fastest internet speeds in North America. In an ULTRAFi Community homeowners will enjoy up to 1 Gigabit of WiFi speed – (that’s 100 times faster than average broadband speeds!) Play, watch, game, surf and stream by the pool, on the trails, in the clubhouse and right inside your home.
